Stuart Maynard has been sacked by York City, just three months after guiding the club back into the English Football League following a 10-year absence. The club announced his exit on social media, revealing it was “not an easy decision” but stemmed from a “difference in direction and vision for the football club”.
Maynard’s tenure ended in dramatic style. In April, York won the National League title on the final day, scoring an equaliser in the 13th minute of second-half stoppage time to draw with title rivals Rochdale – who would have been champions had they won. The Minstermen finished on 108 points.

Maynard had replaced Adam Hinshelwood in August 2025, moving from Notts County to take charge. The club’s statement acknowledged the decision might appear “strange or difficult to understand from the outside”, but insisted that “in the long term, the football club will be in a stronger position because of it”. It added: “We hope our track record of improving year on year has earned us a degree of trust and we understand that not everyone will agree with, or fully understand, this decision right away.”
York face Crawley Town in a Carabao Cup preliminary-round tie on Monday, 3 August, and begin their League Two campaign with a home fixture against Bristol Rovers 12 days later. The new manager will have little time to prepare as the club moves forward under its board’s vision for “sustained success”.
