Tottenham Hotspur have hijacked Manchester United’s pursuit of Mateus Fernandes, agreeing an £85m deal for the West Ham midfielder in a transfer that marks a significant statement of intent from the north London club.
Spurs moved decisively after seeing an £80m bid for Sandro Tonali rejected by Newcastle. Their sporting director, Johan Lange, drove the negotiations, topping Manchester United’s offer and striking an agreement with West Ham for the 21-year-old Portugal international — a guaranteed £85m without add-ons.
“Tottenham agree £85m deal for Mateus Fernandes, beating Manchester United to the West Ham midfielder.”
Manchester United, who had also shown interest in Fernandes, withdrew when the financial demands surpassed their valuation. The club have adopted a policy of patience, seeking the right player at the right price, and were not convinced Fernandes genuinely wanted to play at Old Trafford. He kept the door open to Tottenham throughout negotiations, according to sources.
Fernandes joined West Ham for £40m last summer but has since suffered back-to-back Premier League relegations. Despite that, he attracted interest from Paris St-Germain and Manchester United, with his agent Jorge Mendes fielding inquiries. The midfielder is now poised to pen a long-term contract in north London.
The deal continues a busy summer for Tottenham, who have already signed goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer from Burnley, along with defenders Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke. The Evening Standard described the Fernandes coup as Tottenham “finally acting like a big club,” adding that outmuscling Manchester United financially is “a real sign of the times” as the club’s ownership family stick to their word.
For Manchester United, the focus remains on central midfield. They have agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta for Ederson, but his arrival has been delayed by a Brazil World Cup call-up. With pre-season training starting on 9 July, Michael Carrick’s squad has yet to see significant departures or arrivals, though plans to sell Manuel Ugarte have been shelved after he suffered a serious injury on international duty.
