Two schoolgirls described as a ‘ray of sunshine’ and ‘full of life’ were found dead alongside their mother in a Bedfordshire home – as police hunt for the father who they believe fled the country.
Natalie Tshuma, 15, and Nala Tshuma, five, were discovered at a house in Carnoustie Drive, Great Denham on Monday, alongside their mother, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma. Bedfordshire Police has named the suspect as Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma – also known as Mark – the husband and father. Officers believe he has left the UK via Heathrow Airport and is now in Zimbabwe.
“Two schoolgirls and their mother found dead; father suspected of murder believed to have fled to Zimbabwe.”
Tributes have begun to emerge for the two girls. Natalie attended Bedford Girls’ School, where headmistress Mrs Gemma Gibson said: ‘Natalie was a bright and accomplished Year 10 student who was dearly loved by everyone at Bedford Girls’ School. She was a talented dancer, musician and keen sportswoman. She was fun-loving, full of life and had a positive impact on everyone she came into contact with; she will be remembered with warmth and affection.’
Mrs Gibson added: ‘Her tragic death, together with that of her loving mother and younger sister, who were also well known to many of us, is a hugely devastating shock to all at Bedford Girls’ School and the wider Harpur Trust group of schools.’
Nala attended Pilgrims Pre-Prep School. Headteacher Jo Webster said: ‘Nala was a much-loved member of our school community and brought joy to those around her every day. Many of our staff had known her since she was just seven months old and had the privilege of watching her grow. She was a little ray of sunshine, known for her inquisitive and bubbly nature, her positivity, happiness and her wonderful sense of humour. She was kind, caring, and affectionate, with a huge smile that brightened every room and hugs that made everyone feel special.’
In a press conference, police vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice. Detective Inspector Lee Martin appealed directly to Tshuma to turn himself in. Police also released a CCTV image of the suspect and a photo of the victims.
The schools have asked for privacy as their communities grieve. The search for Tshuma continues, with authorities in Zimbabwe reportedly alerted.
