Donald Trump has declared the ceasefire with Iran “over”, warning he will hit Tehran “20 to one” as the US launched fresh strikes on southern Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) retaliated against American military bases in the Gulf.
“We just hit him very hard. Every time they hit us we’re going to hit them 20 to one,” Trump told reporters onboard Air Force One. The president earlier wrote on Truth Social that the strikes were “retribution for yesterday’s bombing of ships by Iran” in the Strait of Hormuz, adding: “If it happens again, it will get much worse!”

US Central Command (Centcom) said it struck 90 Iranian military targets, including air defence systems and military logistics infrastructure along Iran’s coastline, to “further degrade Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping and innocent civilian mariners”. Iranian state media reported eight explosions in the port city of Bandar Abbas, with air defence systems activated, and two missiles hitting the ports of Sirik and Jask. Two projectiles struck the island of Abu Musa, subject of a longstanding ownership dispute with the UAE. Power cuts were reported in Chabahar and a fire broke out at an IRGC barracks in Bushehr. Passenger rail services between Tehran and Mashhad were suspended.
The IRGC confirmed it launched retaliatory strikes on US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain overnight, calling them the “first phase of the punitive response against the American treaty-breakers”. Explosions were reported in Bahrain’s capital Manama, Kuwait intercepted missiles and drones, and Qatar issued a security alert. Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf wrote on X: “Let me put it plainly: if you strike, you’ll get hit,” adding that the Strait of Hormuz will only open under Iranian arrangements, not “American threats”.
Trump, who earlier said the ceasefire was “over” and branded the Iranian regime “evil”, also raised the prospect of seizing Iran’s Kharg island. Oil prices surged and markets fell as hopes of de-escalation evaporated. Meanwhile, Iranian supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei is set to lead prayers at the funeral of his father, former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, in Qom on 10 July – his first appearance since his father’s death. The renewed hostilities throw any return to diplomacy into doubt, with Trump insisting he no longer wants to negotiate and Iran vowing to respond to every strike.
