Trump says Iran will never have nuclear weapon under new deal

Donald Trump has declared that Iran will “never have a nuclear weapon” under a new agreement reached before the G7 summit in France, as he warned Israel’s prime minister to be “more responsible” over Lebanon.

Speaking at the summit, the US president said the Strait of Hormuz would be open by Friday and that the full text of the memorandum of understanding would be released in a “formal setting”. He said he expected the “second stage” of the deal “to go quickly”.

“The main outcome from the MOU is that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told reporters. He added that he would go over the deal with the media “in a couple of days”.

The president also addressed his relationship with Benjamin Netanyahu, saying it was “great” but that the Israeli leader “has to be more responsible with respect to Lebanon”. He added: “Without me there would be no Israel, because no other president was willing to do what I did.”

Trump arrived at the G7 in France able to say that an agreement had been reached with Iran, the political editor of Channel 4 News reported. But the details remain unclear. The president said the deal would “let the oil flow” and the US naval blockade would end.

The announcement paves the way for further talks on critical details, which are yet to be spelled out.
