Two people were taken to hospital after gunfire erupted at the Haywood Mall in Greenville, South Carolina, on Saturday afternoon – a shooting that police say stemmed from a dispute and was not a random attack.

The Greenville Police Department confirmed the victims were transported to a local hospital, but gave no details on their condition. Officers swarmed the shopping centre, the largest in South Carolina, with help from the sheriff’s office, and cleared the building. Multiple individuals have been detained in connection with the incident, authorities said.

No shots were fired after police arrived, and the mall will remain closed until further notice. The public has been urged to avoid the area.

The shooting came just months after the mall announced it was tightening security following a spate of fights. In a statement issued in June 2025 to the Greenville News, the mall said: “The safety and security of our shoppers, retailers, and employees is our highest priority.” It added that security had been increased both inside and around the mall, including a police presence.

Police have not released the identities of those involved or the nature of the dispute that led to the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
