An 18-year-old Venezuelan footballer who represented his country at the Under-17 World Cup last year has been killed in the two earthquakes that struck the South American country, with a death toll that has already surpassed 900 in two days.
Yimvert Berroteran, a forward for Universidad Central (UCV), became a Venezuelan champion for the first time in December and also won the country's top cup competition that same month. Earlier this month he made his debut for Venezuela's under-20s, following 17 caps for the under-17s.
“Yimvert Berroteran, 18, died after earthquakes hit Venezuela; ex-Premier League striker Salomon Rondon led tributes.”
The Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) announced his death, saying in a statement translated from Spanish: "The Venezuelan Football Federation deeply regrets the passing of Yimvert Berroterán. Today, Venezuelan football bids farewell with immense sorrow to a young man who proudly, committedly, and lovingly represented the colours of our country. His departure grieves the entire Vinotinto family and leaves an indelible mark on all who shared time with him on and off the field."
Reports in the country claim it took 24 hours before rescue workers recovered his body from the rubble.
Former Everton, Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion striker Salomon Rondon led the tributes, replying to the FVF's Instagram post with: "He cannot be a holy God!!!" and punctuating the comment with three broken heart emojis. West Ham United winger Keiber Lamadrid also commented, reacting with a flushed face emoji and a broken heart emoji.
Berroteran played at the Under-17 South American Championship, scoring a goal and assisting the other in a 2-0 win over Bolivia in their opening match. Venezuela reached the semi-finals before losing to hosts Colombia. He then scored again and assisted another in a 3-0 win over Chile to secure third place.
At the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, Venezuela reached the round of 32. The FVF captioned their announcement: "Your light will continue to be present in every heartbeat, Vinotinto," signing off with the infinity emoji.
