Johan Manzambi was on the verge of joining Newcastle United last week. Then Aston Villa stepped in. The Switzerland international has completed a move to Villa Park for a club record fee of just over £50m, eclipsing the £50m Villa paid Everton for Amadou Onana two years ago. Villa moved quickly after learning Manzambi preferred them over Newcastle, and the 20-year-old midfielder is now Unai Emery’s first summer signing.
Villa’s capture comes as Newcastle endure another summer of frustration. Had the club got their way, Manzambi, Victor Munoz and Hugo Ekitike would all be wearing black and white by now. Instead, Manzambi joins a Villa side that can offer Champions League football – a decisive factor after Newcastle finished 12th last season. Ekitike and Munoz went to Liverpool. Benjamin Sesko joined Manchester United, Joao Pedro chose Chelsea, and James Trafford ended up at Manchester City.
“Aston Villa sign Johan Manzambi for club record £50m, beating Newcastle.”
Newcastle have tried to adapt. After Liverpool signed Munoz, the club discreetly pivoted to winger Bazoumana Toure, completing a £43m move from Hoffenheim. Toure had other offers but, as head coach Eddie Howe repeatedly makes clear, wanted a player “desperate” to play for Newcastle. The Ivory Coast international had wanted to move to St James’ Park “for a long time”.
Howe’s desperation mantra has taken on new meaning in a window where Newcastle have already missed several high‑profile targets. “With the events of last summer, and the couple of knockbacks we’ve had so far, it’s hard to defend,” said Newcastle supporter Colin Mitchell. “But deep down the club is still very attractive to the right players, and we only want pl…”
Newcastle’s three signings this summer – Toure, midfielder Sean Steur and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen – are all aged 20 and under. The shift in approach follows last summer’s failed attempt to go toe‑to‑toe with the league’s highest‑earning clubs after qualifying for the Champions League and winning the EFL Cup in 2025. Only five Premier League clubs had an older average starting age than Newcastle last season, and Howe’s side finished 12th.
For Villa, the signing addresses a midfield crisis. They sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35m after the Belgian’s release clause was triggered, and Onana is out until next year with a serious knee injury suffered at the World Cup. Villa are also close to completing a £38m deal for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, who left the Championship club’s training camp in Portugal on Thursday to undergo a medical. Finances are tight as Villa comply with Uefa regulations – left‑back Lucas Digne is close to rejoining Paris St‑Germain – but Manzambi represents Emery’s first statement signing of the summer.
