Vodafone has switched on a new weapon against digital fraud: Number Verify 2.0, a phone number authentication API now live in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. The service lets businesses verify a user’s mobile number without relying on SMS one-time passcodes (OTPs) – a method the operator says lacks a “sufficiently secure way to verify them”, calling it a fundamental gap in digital identity.
Instead of sending a text, the API uses the mobile network to confirm that the number is tied to the user’s SIM and device, working both on mobile data and wifi across “app and web journeys”. That means a fraudster who intercepts an SMS code would be blocked because the network itself checks the user’s identity.
“Vodafone launches Number Verify 2.0 in UK to replace insecure SMS OTPs with network-based authentication.”
The launch comes as the telecoms industry pushes for stronger authentication standards. Vodafone’s plan includes a global rollout, though no timeline has been given for further markets.
For businesses, the promise is fewer fake accounts and payment fraud without annoying customers with one-time codes. For users, it means a login that feels invisible – yet carries the weight of a mobile network’s verification. The real test will be whether Number Verify 2.0 can close a security gap that has left millions of phone numbers vulnerable to exploitation.
