Widdecombe gave final interview 20 minutes before attack, police believe

Ann Widdecombe gave a pre-recorded radio interview around 20 minutes before police believe she was attacked on Wednesday 8 July, it has emerged. The 78-year-old former Conservative minister turned Reform UK spokeswoman was found dead at her home in Devon on Thursday, having sustained serious injuries.

In the interview, recorded via video link with British Christian radio station TWR-UK, Widdecombe spoke for nine minutes about her support for Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. The station did not broadcast the interview at the time, but later shared part of the recording with Times Radio, which aired it on Tuesday — after her death.

Widdecombe's final words included a defence of Farage and a blistering critique of politics, which she branded a 'game of personal destruction', according to the recording.

Counter-terror police are investigating the killing as a targeted attack. A 28-year-old man suspected of murdering the veteran politician has been arrested and police have been granted more time to question him.
