In an unrelated case, Spanish police have arrested a fugitive fraudster known as the 'Black Widow' in the resort town of Los Cristianos, Tenerife. Pamela Gwinnett, 63, was convicted in her absence at Preston Crown Court last year for defrauding 89-year-old Joan Green of nearly £300,000. The court heard Gwinnett, who claimed to be Green's friend and carer, isolated her from her family and treated her as a "cash cow to be milked". She used the money for mortgage payments, meals and Botox treatments. Gwinnett skipped bail and fled to Tenerife in April last year before the trial, and has yet to serve any of her six-year sentence. Spanish police said they received an international arrest warrant on July 14 and arrested her a few hours later in Los Cristianos, where she owned a semi-detached villa and was living normally. She now faces extradition to the UK. A National Police spokesman said: "The events caused significant public outrage due to the method used and the victim's extreme vulnerability." It is unclear whether Gwinnett will contest extradition, but any attempt is likely to delay rather than prevent her return. The judge also made a confiscation order, putting her home in Adlington, Lancashire, at risk.
