The transfer window is open and the World Cup is providing the ultimate shop window, with Premier League clubs eyeing stars who have caught the eye on the biggest stage.
Newcastle may make a third attempt in three years to sign England goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City. The 22-year-old did not feature in England's opener against Croatia, but on the eve of that game he accepted he needs to be first choice at club level to fulfil his dream of becoming his country's number one – a stance that could work in Newcastle's favour as they consider returning to the table for City's cup keeper.
“Premier League clubs target World Cup stars including Trafford, Robinson and Vuskovic as transfer window opens.”
At the other end of the pitch, Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson remains a key transfer target for Manchester City, while Liverpool have shown interest in Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande.
Fulham's Antonee Robinson, a key figure for the USA who completed 90 minutes against Paraguay and 80 against Australia, could come into Manchester United's thinking if they decide their left-sided options need a more defensive player.
Brighton have already had a couple of bids turned down for Tottenham defender Luka Vuskovic. The 19-year-old started Croatia's World Cup opener with England in the heart of a three-man defence but was replaced 20 minutes after half-time as Thomas Tuchel's side dominated. Vuskovic was not completely to blame for Harry Kane getting a free header for his second goal, but the youngster was nearest the ball as Kane got a free run at it and was unable to get beyond John Stones as he tried to leap to challenge.
Crystal Palace, fresh from winning the Conference League, now face an Europa League campaign. Their squad lacked depth last season, prompting the club to bring in Jorgen Strand Larsen, Brennan Johnson and Evann Guessand in the winter window. The higher level of competition means Palace will need to invest again. Tyrick Mitchell is the only first-team quality left-back, while right-back Daniel Munoz – who had knee surgery last season and did not look the same afterwards – is now at the World Cup with Colombia.
With the Premier League season approaching – Coventry will play champions Arsenal in the opening round – clubs must weigh immediate needs against longer-term priorities as the World Cup continues to showcase talent.
