Three months after guiding York City back into the English Football League, Stuart Maynard has been sacked. The club announced the manager's exit on social media, saying the decision was "not an easy one" but stemmed from a "difference in direction and vision for the football club."
Maynard masterminded York's dramatic National League title win in April, scoring an equaliser in the 13th minute of second-half stoppage time to deny rivals Rochdale the trophy. The Minstermen finished the campaign with 108 points, ending a ten-year absence from the EFL.

The former Notts County boss had only taken over in August 2025, replacing Adam Hinshelwood. The club's statement acknowledged the move might appear "strange" from the outside but insisted it was a step towards sustained success. "We hope our track record of improving year on year has earned us a degree of trust," it added.
York now face Crawley Town in a Carabao Cup preliminary-round tie on Monday, 3 August, followed by a League Two opener against Bristol Rovers 12 days later. The decision to part ways with the architect of their return leaves fans questioning the club's long-term ambitions.
