Andrew Tate and brother arrested in Miami as UK unveils 38 new rape and trafficking charges

Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan were arrested by US Marshals in Miami on Saturday evening, hours after British prosecutors announced 38 additional charges against them including rape, sex trafficking and offences relating to indecent images of a child.

The pair were detained outside the James L. Knight Center in Miami, where Andrew was due to host a bare-knuckle boxing match, according to reports. The US Marshals Service confirmed the arrests, with a Department of Justice spokesperson saying they were carried out "pursuant to extradition proceedings".

The Crown Prosecution Service said it had formally requested the brothers' extradition from the United States. Malcolm McHaffie, head of the CPS's Special Crime Division, said: "These charging decisions followed receipt of a further file of evidence from Bedfordshire Police and bring the total number of alleged victims in this case to seven."

Andrew Tate, 39, faces seven further counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and 19 additional charges relating to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography. Tristan Tate, 38, is charged with one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape, and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The alleged offences span July 2010 to August 2017. The new charges come on top of 21 existing charges the brothers already face in the UK, bringing the total number of charges against them to 59 – 42 against Andrew and 17 against Tristan, Bedfordshire Police said.

Joseph McBride, a lawyer for the Tates, dismissed the charges as "filth and slander" designed to counter a defamation action the brothers have filed in the US. "The world knows Andrew and Tristan are innocent," McBride said in a statement. "We are confident that once a competent judge sees the facts, and once the Department of Justice confronts this egregious abuse of its own authority, Andrew and Tristan Tate will walk free. America does not do Britain's political dirty work."

The brothers, dual US-UK citizens who have previously described themselves as proponents of hypermasculinity, moved to Romania in 2016 and were arrested there in 2022 in a separate sexual exploitation investigation. A Romanian travel ban was lifted last year, allowing them to travel to the US. Their arrest warrant remains sealed, and they are expected to make an initial court appearance in Florida early next week.

Bedfordshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Karena Thomas said: "There is no place for male violence against women and girls, and we will continue to work tirelessly to support victims and investigate all reports made to us." The CPS reminded the public that criminal proceedings are active and that the defendants have the right to a fair trial, urging no reporting or commentary that could prejudice the case.
