Arsenal's Saliba injury blow as Liverpool target Kone and push for Jones future

William Saliba limped off the pitch during France's World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain, a worrying sight for Arsenal as the centre-half had been playing through injury all summer. France lost 0-2, ending their campaign, while Saliba's condition remains a concern for the Gunners ahead of the new season.

Meanwhile, Liverpool's transfer business, expected to accelerate after the World Cup final on Sunday, has seen them reignite interest in Roma midfielder Manu Kone. The French international is currently at the World Cup, and according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Roma are under financial strain and need to raise £42m (€50m) to meet UEFA's financial fair play regulations. Atletico Madrid had been confident of securing a deal for Kone at £38m (€45m), but Roma raised their valuation to £51m (€60m) after UEFA extended the July 1 deadline by a month.

Liverpool's midfield struggled last season, with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch dropping in form. Andoni Iraola, who took over as manager, has already overseen the arrivals of Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz, but the midfield remains a priority. Curtis Jones, with 12 months left on his contract, has attracted interest from Inter Milan. The Serie A champions had a £27m bid rejected last month, with Liverpool valuing the 25-year-old at £35m. According to Ben Jacobs, Inter have sped up negotiations through intermediaries. Speaking on Monday, Iraola said: "I will have the chance to speak with him today. I rate Curtis very highly. For me, he is a great, great player…"

With the World Cup ending on Sunday, Liverpool's summer business is set to ramp up, and decisions on both Kone and Jones could shape Iraola's midfield for the 2026/27 campaign.
