BBC announces record World Cup coverage with 54 live matches

The biggest World Cup in history kicks off on 11 June, and the BBC is responding with its most comprehensive coverage yet. With 48 teams – up from 32 – and a record 104 matches across the United States, Canada and Mexico, the broadcaster will show 54 live games on BBC One or Two, all available in UHD on iPlayer and via the BBC Sport website and app.

Among those live matches are Scotland’s group games against Haiti and Brazil, and England’s clash with Ghana. Should England progress, their last-32, last-16 and semi-final ties will also be on the BBC, while the final on 19 July will be simulcast on both the BBC and ITV.

For listeners, BBC Radio 5 Live will provide live commentary on every fixture except when two final group games clash – in those instances, one match will be broadcast in full with updates from the other. A daily Football Daily podcast will be released at 06:00 BST, and Rick Edwards will host 5 Live Breakfast live from Los Angeles. The Wayne Rooney Show will air twice a week, with 606 running weekly.

Digital innovations include an all-new Fifa World Cup 3D experience on the BBC Sport website, giving users total control over camera angles to relive goals as their favourite player, watch tactics unfold in real time, and access side-by-side stats and player data. Every match on iPlayer and the website will feature chapters marking key moments for instant catch-up.

BBC Sport’s television coverage will be fronted by Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott, with Steve Crossman leading Radio 5 Live’s output. The dedicated BBC Football YouTube channel will also carry regular shows and in-depth coverage of all 46 nations, including England and Scotland.

With 92 games available on BBC Sounds and every single match covered online, the BBC promises fans more ways to follow the tournament than ever before.
