A four-year-old British girl has died after drowning in a hotel swimming pool in Lanzarote, Spain, as emergency services dealt with a separate train collision between Bedford and Luton.

The girl passed away despite attempts to revive her at the scene by emergency medical responders. Ambulances and police were called, along with an emergency services helicopter, at around 1.30pm yesterday to a hotel in the resort of Playa Blanca. An ongoing probe into the incident is being led by the Civil Guard under the coordination of an investigating judge. Her death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman at a regional government emergency response coordination centre said: ‘The Canary Islands Government’s Emergency and Security Coordination Centre received an alert reporting that a young girl showing signs of drowning had been pulled from a hotel swimming pool and required medical assistance. … A coordinating nurse, present in the operations room, confirmed during her interview with the lifeguard that the girl had gone into cardiac arrest and gave instructions to begin resuscitation manoeuvres.’

Police and paramedics were called, and a helicopter was mobilised. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. Periana Council said in a statement: ‘Today is a deeply sad day for our town. … There are no words that can ease such immense grief.’

Meanwhile, British Transport Police said they are responding to reports of a “collision involving two trains” near Bedford, with fire and rescue teams on the scene. No further details are known about casualties or the cause of the crash.
