A residential street in West London was thrown into chaos last night after a red single-decker bus careered into a terrace house in Notting Hill, leaving the vehicle wedged into a bay window and the pavement littered with debris.
The No 70 bus mounted the kerb, badly damaging the front window of the home and crushing the steps, according to the London Fire Brigade. Two cars were also damaged in the collision, which happened on St Quintin Avenue at 7.12pm.
“A bus smashed into a Notting Hill home, damaging two cars, with no injuries reported.”
One neighbour who was in the area at the time described the impact as like an ‘earthquake’.
Emergency crews from four fire stations — North Kensington, Hammersmith, Chelsea and Croydon — attended alongside paramedics. A paramedic in a fast response car was sent out, but no injuries were reported.
The Metropolitan Police said: ‘Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade. No injuries were reported, no arrests have been made, and no criminal offences have been identified.’
The crash came just after another bus collided with a Waymo car metres away on Barlby Road. White Waymo cars are currently being trialled with safety drivers across London ahead of a driverless launch later this year.
Other buses were diverted while a cordon remained in place at the scene. Emergency teams worked to remove the vehicle this morning, with the street still covered in debris.
Johnny Thalassites from Kensington and Chelsea Council said: ‘We’d expect an investigation to be underway to establish the cause, but we’re just glad nobody appears to be seriously hurt.’
A Transport for London spokesperson added: ‘The safety of our customers, colleagues, and members of the public is of paramount importance, and we are working closely with the bus operator, First Bus, who are investigating this incident.’
An inquiry into the cause of the crash is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting CAD 7570/2July.
