Chelsea's new teenage goalkeeper Mike Penders compared to Thibaut Courtois after £17m Genk deal

Chelsea’s newest goalkeeping prospect, Mike Penders, comes from the same production line that produced Thibaut Courtois – and the parallels are already drawing attention. The Belgian teenager, signed from Genk for £17m in a deal agreed in 2024, officially joined Chelsea last summer before spending the season on loan at Strasbourg. Now, as he returns to compete for the number one shirt, those around him are comparing him to the legendary 115-cap Belgium international.

Genk’s former goalkeeper coach Gilbert Roex told BBC Sport he thought Chelsea’s fee was “crazy” for a player who had not yet played for Genk’s first team. But Roex also praised Chelsea’s scouting, noting that the club’s head of goalkeeping, Ben Roberts, had been convinced by Penders’ youth appearances. “It was similar to Courtois,” Roex said. “He had only spent one season in the first team when he won the title and was still only 18. Maybe Chelsea’s video scouts have identified a player who could be worth much more in the future.”

This summer, Penders trained with Courtois at the World Cup, and sources close to Courtois told BBC Sport the veteran was very impressed with his understudy – both as a player and as a person. The admiration is mutual, and Chelsea’s plan for now is to keep Robert Sanchez as the number one option while Penders provides serious competition. It’s a similar dynamic to when Filip Jorgensen challenged the Spain international, but Jorgensen failed to unseat him and is now seeking his exit. Penders is effectively drafted in to replace Jorgensen, with a third option being sought either internally or in the transfer market. One-time US international Gabriel Slonina is trialling with partner club Strasbourg.

It was at Strasbourg where Penders made his name. Under former manager Liam Rosenior, who later joined Chelsea, Penders played almost every game in a demanding 52-match season that included runs to the semi-finals of both the Coupe de France and the Conference League. Among goalkeepers in Europe’s top five leagues, no one had a higher average position from goal, underlining his importance in build-up play and how frequently he operated outside his penalty area. At Genk, he made 26 appearances in his final season knowing he would join Chelsea, and he was an unused substitute at the Club World Cup before heading to Strasbourg. Now back at Stamford Bridge, the question is whether the 20-year-old can follow Courtois’ path and become Chelsea’s long‑term number one.
