Chelsea have agreed a club record £117m deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, hijacking the England midfielder from under the noses of Arsenal as new manager Xabi Alonso shapes his squad after a 10th-place Premier League finish.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has agreed terms on a six-year contract with an option for a further year, and is due to undergo a medical on Monday after returning from international duty at the World Cup, where he started England's semi-final defeat by Argentina and created the opening goal for Anthony Gordon.
“Chelsea agree £117m club-record deal for Morgan Rogers, beating Arsenal to the England star's signature.”
The fee makes Rogers the most expensive English player in history, eclipsing the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer, and surpasses Chelsea's previous record of £107m for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Arsenal had been in contact with Villa this month and were considered favourites to sign the former Middlesbrough star, but Chelsea moved quickly to land one of Alonso's top targets. The Spaniard was appointed in May and has secured his first major signing, bolstered by funds from selling Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Andrey Santos to Manchester United.
Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Unai Emery's side and was instrumental in their Europa League triumph last season, providing 14 goals and 12 assists in all competitions. He made 22 senior England appearances, scoring once, and featured in seven World Cup games this summer.
The deal triggers a huge windfall for Middlesbrough, who included a 20% sell-on clause when Rogers joined Villa for an initial £7m rising to £15m in January 2024. The Championship club will earn at least £20.4m, believed to be an English record for a transfer sell-on fee.
Villa have already sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United for £35m and are expected to conclude a deal for Lucas Digne to join Paris Saint-Germain. They have moved to reinvest by signing Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth more than £50m — a club record — and are lining up a £38m move for Wolves' Joao Gomes.
The pressing question now is how Rogers will fit into a Chelsea side that already has Cole Palmer, with the pair both operating in similar positions. Alonso has used both back four and back five systems at his former clubs, leaving uncertainty over his preferred approach. But for Chelsea, the statement is clear: despite missing European football, Stamford Bridge remains an attractive destination for the Premier League's leading talents.
