Twenty-five years after they last graced the top flight, Coventry City will return to the Premier League with a Friday night trip to the champions, Arsenal, on 21 August – a fittingly daunting opener for a club that won the Championship last season.
Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for the title under Mikel Arteta last month, and their reign begins at the Emirates against the Sky Blues. For Coventry, it is a first top-flight match since 2001, and the curtain raiser comes just 34 days after the World Cup final in the United States.
“Coventry City face Arsenal on opening night after 25 years away from the Premier League.”
Fellow promoted clubs Hull City and Ipswich Town also face stern tests on the opening weekend. Hull, who secured promotion via the play-offs, host Manchester United on Saturday 22 August, while Ipswich entertain Sunderland that afternoon. The same day sees Brentford host Tottenham, Everton welcome Crystal Palace, and Leeds visit Nottingham Forest.
Sunday 23 August brings a new era for two giants. Manchester City begin life without Pep Guardiola at home to Bournemouth, who themselves start the campaign with a new manager, Marco Rose. Later that day, Liverpool’s first match under Andoni Iraola – who replaced the sacked Arne Slot after leaving Bournemouth – takes him to Newcastle. The following Monday, Xabi Alonso begins his Chelsea tenure away at Fulham, who are still searching for a new manager after Marco Silva’s departure.
The season, which runs until Sunday 30 May 2027, has later start and end dates than usual because of the World Cup. The Premier League has said the schedule will avoid clashes with Uefa competition dates wherever possible. A joint-record nine Premier League clubs have qualified for European competition: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool in the Champions League; Bournemouth, Sunderland and Crystal Palace in the Europa League; and Brighton in the Conference League.
Boxing Day will see a full round of fixtures return, including a poignant trip for Coventry’s manager, Frank Lampard, to his former club Chelsea. The Manchester derby is set for 12 September, United visit Liverpool on 21 November, and City travel to Arsenal a week later. On the final day, Arsenal host Brighton, City visit Sunderland, and Liverpool face Iraola’s old club Bournemouth.
