Ederson extends Atalanta contract after Manchester United transfer collapses over medical

Brazil midfielder Ederson has signed a contract extension at Atalanta after his proposed £35m move to Manchester United collapsed because of an issue flagged during a medical.

United had agreed the fee on 2 June and planned a medical for early July, but those plans were scrapped when Ederson received a late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad following an injury to Wesley. He eventually underwent a full medical after Brazil's last-16 defeat to Norway, with initial tests in the United States having already raised concerns. Specialists were involved, and the outcome led United to back out of the transfer.

While sources had told BBC Sport the deal could be resurrected later in the summer on different terms, the 27-year-old has now committed his future to the Serie A side. Atalanta did not announce the length of the new deal.

The collapse came as United bolstered their midfield elsewhere, signing Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, as well as goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Leeds United. The club have also reportedly made contact with representatives of Eintracht Frankfurt talent Hugo Larsson, according to reports.

Elsewhere in the transfer market, Arsenal's pursuit of Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers looks to have been hijacked by Chelsea, with the midfielder poised to move to Stamford Bridge. The Gunners, who have agreed personal terms with Christos Tzolis as a potential replacement, had also been tracking Villa defender Ezri Konsa. Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, is reportedly set to join Besiktas after leaving Liverpool, following Leandro Trossard's move to the Turkish side earlier this month. Leeds United are also stepping up their interest in Lyon's Pavel Sulc, valued at €25m (£21m), as they look to capitalise on the French club's financial difficulties.
