Eight critical after Bedford train crash as boy thrown into crocodile pit improves

Eight people are fighting for their lives in hospital after a train driver was killed in a crash near Bedford on Friday. More than 100 people have received medical treatment since the collision, which happened just after 5pm when one train smashed into the back of another on the same line. More than 50 remain in hospital, with eight in critical condition.

In a separate incident, a three-year-old boy who was allegedly thrown into a crocodile pit at a zoo in Huntingdon is no longer in critical condition, police have confirmed. The child suffered a broken arm and pelvis after being thrown 15 feet into the crocodile enclosure at Johnsons of Old Hurst last Thursday. Cambridgeshire Police arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder. A spokesperson said: 'The boy is no longer critical and is in a stable condition in hospital.' The suspect was found unfit for interview and bailed until September 18. A witness at the zoo described seeing a man of 'bigger build' with two carers who 'weren't paying much attention' and were 'on their phones'. Tracey Johnson, 55, her husband Andrew, 56, and their son Edward, 29, all helped rescue the child.
