Head coach Tuchel was brought in specifically to overcome the barriers that have blocked England at previous tournaments. However, he failed when the pressure was on. The team contributed to their own downfall with a passive strategy against Argentina that led to a semi-final defeat. "There was an added layer of disappointment that Tuchel and England's players contributed so much to their own downfall," the report added.
Speaking at half-time during the third-place play-off, assistant manager Anthony Barry described the team's state of mind: "They're playing a game with broken hearts. I see 11 lads on the field with broken hearts." Despite the emotional setback, there were contrasting views. Declan Rice insisted: "Best England team for a long time? That's a fact."
