England swept to a 3-0 victory over Ukraine on Tuesday night, but the result was not enough to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil — leaving the European champions facing the play-offs.
Last weekend's 4-0 defeat to Spain in Mallorca had already taken qualification out of England's hands, with their fate hinging on Iceland taking points off the world champions. That did not happen, and despite a commanding performance against Ukraine, Sarina Wiegman's side were left to rue the earlier loss.
“England beat Ukraine 3-0 but miss automatic World Cup qualification, now facing play-offs after Spain defeat.”
The Lionesses bounced back from the heavy defeat in Spain with a disciplined display, but it could not dislodge Spain from top spot in the group. The result means England must now navigate the play-offs to reach Brazil 2027, a route they will have hoped to avoid after winning the European Championship in 2022.
Wiegman got the response she demanded from her players after the disappointment in Mallorca, but the margin of victory was irrelevant — only three points mattered, and they were secured comfortably. Yet the damage had already been done.
The play-offs now represent the only path to the World Cup for England, who will need to regroup and refocus for the next phase of qualification.
