England are currently pencilled in to face Ecuador in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup – but that could change after Saturday night’s final group game against Panama.
The Three Lions sit top of Group L with four points from their opening two matches, despite not yet securing their spot as group winners. Ecuador booked their potential meeting with England after an epic comeback win over Germany, but the schedule is far from set.
“England currently set to face Ecuador in World Cup round of 32, but could change after Panama match.”
Thomas Tuchel’s side will know more after facing Panama this weekend. England striker Harry Kane said: “I think the boss will be clear on his decisions, it wouldn't surprise me if he made some changes anyway and just kept the team fresh. He knows, as well as all of us, there is an extra game as well, so a long way to go, and we are in a good spot.
“Panama, we expect probably a bit of a different game, so whoever plays in that one will be ready, will be energetic from the start, and probably won't face as much of a low block. There will be periods where we have to break it down for sure, but that's what the squad is for. There are another six games to go, hopefully, so a lot of football to be played, and whoever's on the pitch, the guys will be ready.”
If the standings hold, England would meet Ecuador on Wednesday, July 1, in Atlanta, with a 5pm kick-off UK time. But a twist remains: Ghana could still leapfrog England to the top of Group L, dramatically altering the knockout path.
The 2026 World Cup – the biggest in history with 48 teams – is being staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the group stages nearing a conclusion. The BBC will show 54 matches live, including the final on 19 July, while every game will be covered on the BBC Sport website and app.
Four round of 32 matches have already been confirmed after Thursday and Friday’s results.
