Essex Police said the driver of a black Ford KA, 18, was arrested in connection with the collision on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs and failing to stop.

He was released under investigation.

The driver allegedly fled the scene in Maldon Road after the incident at 06:30 BST.

Canty, who worked as a water quality engineer and water supply worker, had been on his way home from work during the Covid lockdown in April 2020 when a police officer collapsed on a bus.

“We were just on our way home one evening, just talking and he just dropped down... in my lap,” he said.

Canty said he rang the bell to stop the bus and gave the officer CPR with the help of the 999 operator and first aid training from work. The officer was airlifted to hospital and spent five days in intensive care.

“I phoned him on the win and he said ‘good karma happens to good people’,” Canty said.

The couple were pictured spraying champagne while holding their giant cheque, and Canty vowed not to give up his day job.

Police are appealing for anyone with CCTV, dash cam or other footage of a black Ford KA being driven in the area around the time of the collision to come forward. “Please quote 174 of 21 May,” the force said.

“He remains under investigation and our enquiries continue,” a police spokesman added.
