Nottingham Forest prepare £45m bid for Tottenham’s Bergvall after £38m rejection

Nottingham Forest are set to return with an improved £45m offer for Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall, after their initial £38m bid was rejected last week. The 20-year-old Sweden international wants the move to the City Ground, having played limited minutes last season under Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi, often deployed outside his preferred number six role.

Forest's new manager, Oliver Glasner, addressed the prospect of the signing in his first press conference on Thursday without naming Bergvall directly. “I have one strength and weakness, it’s impatience,” he said. “Sometimes it’s a strength, sometimes it’s a weakness. Of course, I would have hoped they already trained with us on the other side.” He added that players currently at the World Cup are still on vacation but he is “pretty convinced” some will join the squad in Portugal for a training camp.

Bergvall joined Tottenham from Swedish club Djurgarden in 2024 and was named the club’s player of the year after his first Premier League season, which ended with Spurs winning the Europa League to end a 17-year trophy drought. In April 2025, he signed a new contract until 2031. He made 33 appearances last season but missed two months after ankle surgery. On the international stage, he has 14 caps for Sweden and played at the World Cup, where his side were eliminated by France in the last 32.

Forest are believed to be looking for another midfielder in addition to Bergvall after Elliot Anderson’s record-breaking move to Manchester City. However, there will not be another 13-player £180m spree like last summer; the club are focused on quality over quantity. A goalkeeper is needed to support Matz Sels and John Victor, while a striker is also wanted to aid Chris Wood, who turns 35 in December, and Igor Jesus.

The improved bid signals Forest’s determination to secure Bergvall, a player Glasner clearly hopes will be part of a more selective, targeted rebuilding effort at the City Ground.
