A former student has been charged with attempted murder after a campus safety officer was seriously injured in a crossbow attack at the University of Surrey.
Almunthir Daqamah, 21, a Saudi national, appeared in court on Friday charged with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon, two counts of possession of a bladed article and possession of class B drugs, Surrey Police said.
“A 21-year-old former student has been charged with attempted murder after a University of Surrey campus safety officer was shot with a crossbow in Guildford.”
The attack took place on Thursday at the university's student village in Guildford. The victim, a man in his 50s who works as a campus safety officer, was shot with a crossbow and taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police later confirmed his condition was stable.
Daqamah was arrested at the scene and has been remanded in custody. He is due to appear before magistrates in Guildford.
Assistant Chief Constable Nev Kemp of Surrey Police said: “This was a horrific incident that has left a man with serious injuries. Our thoughts remain with him and his family.”
The university said it was providing support to staff and students. A spokesperson described the attack as “shocking” and confirmed that the injured officer was receiving medical care.
Crossbow attacks are rare in the UK, but the incident has raised questions about campus security. The University of Surrey said it would review its safety procedures.
Daqamah’s next court appearance is expected later this month.
