A three-year-old girl has been found dead at a home in Chertsey, Surrey, in a suspected murder, prompting police to arrest a 31-year-old man. Officers arrived at the property on Pyrcroft Road at around 5.40pm after receiving concerns for her safety. Inside, they discovered the girl’s body and the man suffering a serious injury. He was taken to hospital and will be taken into custody once treated. Surrey Police said their enquiries lead them to believe the incident took place within a family setting and they are not looking for anyone else. The senior investigating officer described it as a “tragic incident” and said there is no reason to believe there is any risk to the public. A significant police presence will remain in the area over the coming days.

In a separate incident on the Isle of Wight, a 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and arson after a body was found inside a burned house in Cowes. Emergency services were called to a fire at a property in the early hours. Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution while the fire was brought under control. A body was subsequently located within the property. Formal identification has not taken place, but next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious. The suspect, who is from Ventnor, also faces arson with intent to endanger life and remains in custody. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary are appealing for anyone with doorbell, dashcam or CCTV footage from the area to come forward.
