Graham Smith, a 42-year-old father-of-two from Preston, was found dead in a room at the Queens Hotel in Cheltenham on June 11 this year. An inquest opening heard he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His wife posted a heartbreaking tribute online alongside photographs of him with their sons, Corey and Olly. She described him as "my handsome husband, much-loved son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend, but above all else, the proud and devoted dad of Corey and Olly."
“Father-of-two Graham Smith, 42, found dead in Cheltenham hotel; inquest hears he took his own life.”
She recalled his humour and quirks: "Graham was a goalkeeping extraordinaire, an outstanding cook, keen hiker, golfer, Bob Graham support expert and self-appointed General Knowledge World Champion. He was a man who was always factually correct... according to Graham."
She added: "He was a master of the wind-up and a proud wearer of Crocs, often in places where Crocs really shouldn't have been. His humour, kindness, loyalty and ability to tell you exactly why your facts, directions or opinions were wrong will be remembered by everyone lucky enough to have known him."
An inquest into Graham's death was opened and adjourned at Preston Coroners' Court on Thursday July 2. Senior Coroner Chris Long confirmed that the cause of death was consistent with Graham having taken his own life. The court heard Graham worked as a strategic projects director.
A final inquest will be held on October 27.
