Lewis Hamilton is on the verge of his first victory in Ferrari red after a perfectly timed pit stop under virtual safety car conditions handed him the lead at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The seven-times world champion, who has emerged as Kimi Antonelli’s closest championship contender after consecutive second-place finishes in Canada and Monaco, now holds a 14.7-second advantage over Charles Leclerc in second.

Starting from second on the grid – splitting the Mercedes pair of George Russell on pole and championship leader Antonelli in third – Hamilton seized his opportunity when Fernando Alonso stopped on the grass at turn 9, triggering a VSC deployment. With Russell pitting a lap later and emerging in fourth, Hamilton’s stop was timed to perfection, allowing him to rejoin ahead of his compatriot.

“Nice to feel in the groove again,” Russell had said on team radio after lapping 0.064 seconds quicker than Hamilton in qualifying to claim his 10th career pole. But the Briton now finds himself fourth, with his engineer warning: “24 laps remaining, this is the race in front of you.”

Antonelli, seeking a sixth consecutive win to extend his 66-point championship lead over Hamilton, briefly led after the pit stop cycle, 4.5 seconds ahead of the Ferrari. However, the 19-year-old Italian has already received a black-and-white flag for track limits violations, and any further infringement will incur a five-second penalty.

McLaren’s Lando Norris, who qualified fourth, pitted for hard tyres and re-emerged in sixth. Mercedes have taken pole in all seven races so far in the 2026 season, winning every grand prix – but Hamilton’s Ferrari strategy could break that streak. As Russell defended from Antonelli, Hamilton cruised past the McLaren of Norris on fresher tyres at turn 3, lapping rapidly through the field.

The race, round seven of the championship, has been dominated by Mercedes’ pace, but Hamilton is now in control. With his Ferrari on 11-lap-old medium tyres and a clear track ahead, the question is whether the Italian team can finally deliver a win for their star driver.
