Cristian Romero helped Argentina reach a second straight World Cup final this month, but the Tottenham captain may have played his last game for the club after Inter Milan confirmed talks over a summer move.
Inter’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, told Sky Italy: “It’s definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club. These things take some time but there’s definitely interest. Let’s see.”
“Inter Milan confirm talks for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, who is yet to report for pre-season.”
Romero, 28, has been a key figure since joining Spurs in 2021, making 156 appearances and guiding the team to Europa League success last year. However, his 2025-26 campaign was marred by four separate suspensions, and with Tottenham strengthening their defence this summer, a departure now appears likely.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side has already signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m and will add Marcos Senesi as a free agent in June, boosting options at centre-back. Romero’s representatives have been in Milan for talks this weekend, while the Argentina international has yet to report for pre-season training, raising questions over his immediate future.
Tottenham are willing to let Romero leave for a significant fee, ending an eventful five-year spell in north London. The centre-back helped Argentina reach the World Cup final, where they were beaten by Spain, but could now follow a path to Serie A as Inter look to secure a deal.
