Jailed UK couple: Lammy confirms Iran talks as son calls for prisoner swap

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has confirmed that the UK has been holding talks with Iran over a British couple jailed in Tehran on spying charges, as their son called for a prisoner swap to secure their release.

The couple, whose names have not been disclosed, were detained in Iran and remain in custody. Lammy, addressing the proposed exchange, said talks had taken place but did not provide details.

Their son, Joe Bennett, said deporting Iranian national Richard Jan in exchange for his parents could secure their freedom. Jan, described as the UK's 'worst stalker', is currently in British custody. Bennett questioned why such a swap had not been considered.

However, No 10 has ruled out exchanging Jan with Tehran, refusing to trade the convict. The government’s stance leaves the fate of the couple uncertain.

Bennett’s plea comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between London and Tehran. The couple’s imprisonment has heightened tensions, with their son urging action.

Lammy’s confirmation of talks marks the first public acknowledgment of negotiations. But with No 10 rejecting a swap involving Jan, the path to their release remains unclear. The couple remain jailed in Tehran, their future hanging on the outcome of the discussions.
