Leeds refuse to name Manchester United as Karl Darlow completes Old Trafford move

Leeds United refused to mention bitter rivals Manchester United by name when confirming Karl Darlow’s departure, as the goalkeeper became the first player in 22 years to move directly from Elland Road to Old Trafford.

The Yorkshire club issued a terse statement announcing that the 35-year-old had left upon the expiry of his contract “to pursue an opportunity elsewhere”, without naming his new employers. The omission underlined the deep enmity between the two clubs, who have not conducted a direct transfer since Gordon Strachan, Eric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand and Alan Smith made the same switch.

Leeds refused to name Manchester United when Karl Darlow joined them, the first direct transfer between the clubs in 22 years.

Darlow, who played 38 times for Leeds over three seasons, joins Manchester United on a free transfer as their second signing of the summer. He is expected to provide competition for number one Senne Lammens. United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, said: “Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad.”

The goalkeeper himself expressed pride at the move. “I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United,” Darlow said. “This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part.”

United have also completed deals for midfielders Andre Santos and Youri Tielemans, from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively, for a combined £85m. Tielemans, whose shirt number was confirmed as he follows in the footsteps of club legends, becomes the club’s third summer addition. The Belgian is expected to bolster a midfield already strengthened by Santos, as United build for the new campaign.
