Mbappe and Messi locked on eight goals in thrilling World Cup Golden Boot race

The race for the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup has become a two-man battle, with Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi level on eight goals apiece as the tournament reaches its climax. Mbappe, despite failing to score in France's semi-final defeat to Spain, still leads the standings thanks to three assists – one more than his Argentine rival. The tiebreaker rule stipulates that if players are tied on goals, the number of assists decides the winner; if still tied, minutes played and goals-per-minute ratio come into play.

Mbappe’s tournament began with a brace against Senegal, followed by another against Iraq and a third double in the round of 32 against Sweden. He added a crucial penalty against Paraguay in the last 16 and scored again in the quarter-finals against Morocco, despite earlier missing a spot-kick. In the semi-final, however, he drew a blank as France exited 2-0 to Spain, ending his hopes of World Cup glory but leaving him with a third-place play-off to add to his tally.

Messi, meanwhile, opened his account with a hat-trick against Algeria – the first of three multi-goal games. He scored twice against Austria – a match in which he also missed a penalty before breaking the all-time World Cup scoring record – and added goals off the bench against Jordan, and in narrow knockout wins over Cape Verde and Egypt. His eight goals have propelled Argentina into a semi-final against England.

Behind the leading pair, Erling Haaland has seven goals, including a double against Brazil in the round of 16 – his 14th consecutive international game with a goal. England’s Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham are joint-fourth on six goals, with Bellingham climbing the charts after scoring four times in two matches: a goal and assist against Mexico – where he also netted his third and fourth of the tournament – followed by a fifth and sixth against Norway in the quarter-finals.

Other contenders include Ousmane Dembele (five goals, two assists), Mikel Oyarzabal (five goals, one assist), and four-goal players Vinicius Jr, Ismaila Sarr, and Julian Quinones. With one match remaining – the third-place play-off between France and the loser of England vs Argentina – Mbappe has a final chance to edge ahead of Messi, who will contest the semi-final before a potential final. The Golden Boot may ultimately be decided by the narrowest of margins, with assists and minutes poised to play a decisive role.
