A witness who filmed the aftermath described the driver fleeing, speeding up after a person tried to open his car door while others kicked the vehicle. ‘There’s a car with some damage to its rear bumper. One person has been picked up and put into an ambulance, and there’s two people lying on the floor,’ they said.
Minutes earlier, at 2:29pm today, the car had ploughed into five pedestrians on Ealing Broadway, West London. The vehicle did not stop at the scene but was intercepted a short time later in nearby Grange Park, where police arrested the driver – a 34-year-old Somalia-born British man – on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder.
“Man, 34, arrested after car hits five pedestrians in Ealing Broadway; three taken to hospital, one to major trauma centre.”
Two of the pedestrians were treated outside M&S on the Broadway, while three others were taken to hospital. None suffered life-threatening or life-changing injuries, but one person was rushed to a major trauma centre as a priority. The London Ambulance Service said they sent multiple ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, a volunteer emergency responder crew, an incident response officer, and London’s Air Ambulance.
Metropolitan Police liaised with Counter Terrorism officers during initial enquiries, but the incident is not being treated as terrorist-related. A force spokesperson said: ‘While investigators are keeping an open mind as to any potential motive, the incident is not being treated as terrorism.’
Alexander Stafford, a former councillor for Ealing Broadway between 2014 and 2021, wrote on X: ‘Absolutely horrific news from Ealing Broadway – as a councillor I used to represent this area and used to work in that very M&S. Praying for a speedy recovery for all the injured.’
The Broadway has been closed in both directions between High Street and Spring Bridge Road, with several bus routes diverted. Police warned the closures could remain in place for some time. Anyone with footage or information is asked to call 101, quoting reference 4607/27JUN.
