Armed police swooped on a residential street in Brierfield, Lancashire, shortly after 3pm on Friday following reports of a stabbing – a 17-year-old girl had been knifed in the back of the neck in broad daylight.

A 30-year-old man was arrested soon afterwards on suspicion of attempted murder, as officers cordoned off Wood Street where the attack happened. The teenager was taken to hospital with a stab wound to the back of her neck; her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Lancashire Police said: "We were called at 3.06pm today to Wood Street, Brierfield, to a report of stabbing. It was reported that a 17-year-old girl had been assaulted and suffered a stab injury to her neck. Officers, some of them armed, attended and a 30-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of attempted murder."

The force added that the girl was being treated for a stab wound to the back of her neck. A spokesperson acknowledged the incident would "cause alarm in the local community" and said extra patrols would be in the area that evening to provide reassurance.

Detectives have urged anyone who witnessed the attack or has CCTV or doorbell footage to come forward, asking them to contact 101 quoting log 0836 of 12th June.
