Manchester United's Andre Onana set for second Trabzonspor loan

Andre Onana is on the verge of rejoining Trabzonspor on loan, with sources indicating the deal is 90 per cent complete and will not include an option to buy. The 30-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper spent last season on loan at the Turkish club after being loaned out following United's shock EFL Cup defeat to League Two Grimsby last August — his only appearance of the campaign. He went on to make 29 appearances for Trabzonspor and helped them lift the Turkish Cup for the first time since 2020.

Onana, a £47.2 million signing from Inter Milan in 2023, still has two years left on his United contract and was scheduled to return for pre-season training on 9 July. But he knew there was no chance of ousting Senne Lammens as head coach Michael Carrick's first-choice goalkeeper. With Lammens away with Belgium at the World Cup, the future of number two Altay Bayindir uncertain and promising youngster Radek Vitek hoping to secure a move before pre-season begins, Carrick could be left with inexperienced goalkeepers plus veteran Tom Heaton in his squad for the opening friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki on 17 July.
