Manchester United have agreed a £35m (€40.5m) deal with Atalanta for Brazil midfielder Ederson, Michael Carrick's first signing as manager. The 26-year-old, capped three times by Brazil, is yet to undergo a medical but is expected to join before pre-season training begins in early July.
The move kick-starts a midfield overhaul after Casemiro's departure and Carrick's loss of faith in Manuel Ugarte, a £50m buy from PSG in 2024 who was not used at all after starting the home defeat by Leeds in April. With Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes typically used further forward, United are likely to add two or three players in the centre of the pitch. Academy graduates Tyler Fletcher – part of Scotland's World Cup squad – and Jacob Devaney, who impressed on loan at St Mirren, are also options.

That ambition has been boosted by a potential cash injection from Mason Greenwood's expected move from Marseille to Fenerbahce. United included a 40% sell-on clause when Greenwood joined Marseille for £26.6m in 2024, and with the Ligue 1 club seeking a minimum of £43m for the forward, United could net around £19m. Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has claimed: 'We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood. He has proven himself at the highest level of European football. He has agreed to join Fenerbahce during the most valuable and productive years of his career.' The rival candidate, Aziz Yildirim, is also expected to pursue the signing if he wins Sunday's presidential election.
The extra funds could help United land West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, though the relegated club want £80m for the midfielder who joined from Southampton for over £40m last summer. No formal offer has been made, and United are also interested in Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Newcastle's Lewis Hall. The next few days will be decisive, with the outcome of the Fenerbahce election potentially unlocking a significant windfall for Carrick's rebuild.
