Man Utd urged to sign Lewandowski as Berrada vows to stick to transfer plan

Robert Lewandowski is a free agent after Barcelona let his contract expire, and former Manchester United striker Gusieppe Rossi has urged the club to sign the 37-year-old, calling it a "no-brainer" that would benefit young striker Benjamin Sesko.

But United chief executive Omar Berrada has insisted the club will not be swayed from their disciplined transfer approach. "We have a clear plan," Berrada told the Inside Carrington podcast. "Whatever decisions we take will not just be for the short term but the long term."

United are coming off a successful window last summer, when they signed Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and goalkeeper Senne Lammens. All four made a positive impact as United finished third in the Premier League and qualified for the Champions League for the first time in three years.

"The template for what we did last summer will be replicated," Berrada said. The club have already agreed a £35m deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, and remain interested in West Ham's £80m-rated Mateus Fernandes. They also want a striker back-up for Sesko and a left-sided player.

Rossi, speaking to Ozoon, said of Lewandowski: "He has a huge resume and on a short-term deal, it's a win-win." The Polish striker scored 120 goals in 193 games for Barcelona, but at 37, a move would run counter to United's stated preference for a "mix of experience and youth."

United have seen Rasmus Hojlund join Napoli permanently after a loan, leaving them light in attack. They previously landed elite veteran striker Edinson Cavani on a free in 2020, who scored 17 times in his first season. Yet Berrada has stressed the club will not overpay, which may shape their approach to Lewandowski.

"We want a mix of players who have demonstrated they can perform in the Premier League and players that are doing very well outside the Premier League," Berrada added. Whether Lewandowski fits that mix remains to be seen.
