The moment Marwan Jumaa, 20, casually walked out of North Manchester Hospital on Tuesday evening, police launched a manhunt for a prisoner they describe as high-risk and dangerous. Jumaa was serving an indefinite hospital order after being convicted of two robberies in which two women and police officers suffered serious injuries. He had been transferred from a secure hospital facility for medical treatment when he absconded.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said Jumaa was last seen in the Radcliffe area and has links to Bury, Prestwich and Crumpsall, as well as Leeds and London. He is described as having a skinny build, short dark hair and is about 5ft 10in. Officers warned the public not to approach him and to call 999 immediately if sighted.
“Marwan Jumaa, 20, escaped from North Manchester Hospital; police warn do not approach.”
Specialist officers, including GMP’s Force Critical Wanted Unit, have been deployed as the search enters its second day. Detective Superintendent Amber Waywell said: “We are undertaking extensive work in our search for Jumaa, utilising all necessary resources and officers in order to return him to lawful custody. We have no information to suggest any intention to inflict imminent harm, but ultimately, he is a wanted and dangerous individual. I fully understand that this is concerning news, but I want the public to know that we are working around the clock to find him.”
Detective Chief Inspector Abigail Cronin added: “We are urging anybody to come forward who may have information about Marwan’s whereabouts. I recognise that this may heighten concern within the community. However, I want to assure you that we have officers working around the clock to find Marwan and return him to hospital as soon as possible. If sighted, do not approach him, please call 999 immediately.”
In January this year, Jumaa pleaded guilty at Woolwich Crown Court to three offences: assaulting an emergency worker, a police officer, the robbery of a woman and inflicting grievous bodily harm on a second woman, all committed in London on July 17 last year. He had been held at HMP Belmarsh in March and sentenced in April. Police added that Jumaa may require medical assistance. Anyone with information is asked to call 999.
