Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £34m for Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba, with the 20-year-old Frenchman due on Tyneside on Thursday to undergo a medical and sign a long-term contract. The move marks the club’s fourth signing of the summer and underlines a sharp shift in transfer strategy under Eddie Howe.
Bamba, who made his senior debut only in August 2025 and has 12 competitive starts for Monaco, arrives as a replacement for Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham last month for an initial £92.5m. The Italy midfielder’s departure left a hole in Newcastle’s engine room, and Bamba – who prefers to operate as a No 6 – is seen as the long-term answer.
“Newcastle agree £34m deal for Monaco's Aladji Bamba, who flies to Tyneside for medical.”
Among Ligue 1 midfielders who played at least 500 minutes last season, Bamba ranked in the top five for duels won (9.1 per game), tackles (3.6), successful take-ons (1.6) and aerial duels won (1.9). He has represented France at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 levels.
Newcastle’s new policy is to sign players aged 24 or under costing between roughly £20m and £40m with high resale potential – a necessity after the club recently negotiated a three-year settlement agreement with Uefa for breaching European spending rules. Alongside Bamba, they have already brought in 18-year-old Sean Steur from Ajax, 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims, and 20-year-old winger Bazoumana Touré from Hoffenheim.
It is a far cry from last summer, when Newcastle spent £55m on the 29-year-old forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford. At this stage a year ago, the only new face was Anthony Elanga.
Bamba’s negotiations were carried out discreetly; news of the agreement emerged only when he was en route to Newcastle. He will need time to adapt to the Premier League’s physicality and intensity, but the club believe calculated risks on such talents are necessary before they become out of reach.
Howe, meanwhile, still hopes to keep captain Bruno Guimarães amid interest from Arsenal, though Mikel Arteta has yet to make a formal offer for the Brazil midfielder.
