Newcastle United are on the verge of completing a £34m move for Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba, with the 20-year-old Frenchman due on Tyneside on Thursday for a medical and to sign a long-term contract.
Bamba, who made his senior debut in August 2025 and has represented France at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 levels, ranked among Ligue 1’s top five midfielders (minimum 500 minutes) last season for duels won (9.1 per game), tackles (3.6), successful take-ons (1.6) and aerial duels won (1.9). Despite having only 12 competitive starts for Monaco, Newcastle see him as a calculated risk in a summer transfer strategy that has shifted decisively towards youth.

Eddie Howe has already signed 18-year-old Sean Steur from Ajax, 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and 20-year-old winger Bazoumana Touré. The club’s new policy targets players aged 24 or under, costing between £20m and £40m, with high resale potential — a response to the three-year settlement agreement with Uefa after breaching spending rules. Bamba, who operates primarily as a No 6, is viewed as a direct replacement for Sandro Tonali, the Italy midfielder who left for Tottenham in an initial £92.5m deal last month.
Negotiations were conducted discreetly, with news of the agreement emerging only as Bamba began his journey to Newcastle. The move underlines a marked change from last summer, when the club spent £55m on 29-year-old forward Yoane Wissa. By contrast, at this stage a year ago, Newcastle had brought in only Anthony Elanga.
Bamba, like Steur, Jaouen and Touré, will need time to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League. Meanwhile, Barcelona confirmed the £19m signing of Germany winger Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund until 2031, a deal that includes a sell-on clause. Howe still hopes to retain Bruno Guimarães amid interest from Arsenal, though the north London club have yet to make a formal offer.
Newcastle’s summer rebuild continues, with further reinforcements expected — but for now, the focus is on a 20-year-old midfielder who has yet to prove himself in England’s top flight.
