The domestic football calendar has been turned on its head for the 2026-27 season, with the Carabao Cup first round scheduled to take place before a single league ball has been kicked. The unprecedented restructuring, confirmed as the EFL published its fixture list, is designed to accommodate nine Premier League clubs competing in European competitions. A special preliminary round involving York City, Crawley Town, Tranmere Rovers and Rochdale was drawn in June to reduce the field to exactly 32 teams before the main competition begins on the weekend of 7-9 August. The Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two campaigns will then start the following week.
But the most eye-catching story of the opening weekend belongs to Coventry City. The Sky Blues, who won the Championship last season, will make their first top-flight appearance in 25 years with a Friday night trip to the champions, Arsenal, on 21 August. Mikel Arteta’s side ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season, and now face a Coventry team managed by Frank Lampard — the two will meet again on Boxing Day, when Lampard takes his side to Chelsea.
“Coventry City return to Premier League after 25 years at Arsenal, while Carabao Cup round precedes EFL season.”
The opening weekend brims with narrative. Hull City, promoted via the play-offs, host Manchester United on Saturday 22 August, while Ipswich entertain Sunderland that day. Manchester City begin life without Pep Guardiola at home to Bournemouth on Sunday 23 August, with Bournemouth themselves under new management in Marco Rose. Liverpool’s first match under Andoni Iraola, who replaced the sacked Arne Slot after leaving the Cherries, is away at Newcastle on the same day. Xabi Alonso starts his Chelsea tenure at Fulham on Monday 24 August, with the Cottagers yet to appoint a successor to Marco Silva.
The season’s start and end dates have shifted later than usual owing to the World Cup, which finished in the United States 34 days before the opening Friday. The campaign will conclude on 30 May 2027, with the Champions League final six days later. To ease congestion, the Premier League has merged September and October’s international breaks into a single three-week window beginning after the weekend of 19-20 September, and has committed to no two rounds of matches falling within 60 hours of each other over the Christmas period. A full Boxing Day programme returns this season, with Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Newcastle the only game on that date last year.
Key derbies and rivalries are already etched into the calendar. The first Manchester derby arrives on 12 September at Old Trafford, while Arsenal travel to Liverpool on 6 February. The final day sees Arsenal host Brighton, City visit Sunderland, and Liverpool face Iraola’s former club Bournemouth. For Coventry, the journey back to the top flight begins under the lights at the Emirates — a moment 25 years in the making.
