Prince William drew laughter and applause this week after joking about his receding hairline while preparing welcome packs for vulnerable tenants in Aberdeen — a lighthearted moment that briefly upstaged a week of formal royal engagements.
Days earlier, the Prince of Wales had joined King Charles and Queen Camilla at the Order of the Thistle Service in Edinburgh, walking past a mixed crowd of fans and protesters lining the Royal Mile. The service at St Giles’ Cathedral marked the second day of the King’s visit to Scotland for Holyrood Week.
“Prince William joked he didn't need a hairdryer during a homelessness initiative visit, days after joining royals at the Thistle Service.”
But it was William’s visit to the Langstane Housing Association that generated a viral moment. During the stop, part of his Homewards initiative to tackle homelessness, staff showed him a hairdryer. Without missing a beat, he replied: “Some of us don’t need hairdryers.”
Footage posted on X showed him chuckling to himself afterwards. Those around him were also seen laughing, impressed that he was willing to mock himself. One account on social media said: “Prince William always manages to make the people around him feel good, by joking around. This time, he poked fun at himself for not needing a hairdryer.”
It was not the first time the prince has used humour during an engagement. He has previously been praised for his handling of a young admirer who called out to him in the street.
During the same visit, William helped carry chairs upstairs and assembled welcome packs for a flat in King Street, intended for a vulnerable tenant. The Homewards initiative aims to furnish homes for people at risk of homelessness.
The hairdryer clip prompted a wave of online reactions, with one viewer commenting: “Prince William is lovely and adorable.” Another added: “I love him,” while a third simply wrote: “That’s hilarious.”
