‘Millionaire banker’ arrested nine years after ‘Putney Pusher’ attack on bridge

A millionaire banker and former British Army officer has been arrested at his £1.4m west London home – nine years after a jogger allegedly shoved a woman into the path of a double-decker bus on Putney Bridge.

The 44-year-old suspect was detained on Monday on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm, the Metropolitan Police confirmed. He remains in custody.

Millionaire banker ex-army officer arrested nine years after Putney Bridge jogger pushed woman into bus path.

The arrest comes nearly a decade after the May 2017 attack, which was caught on CCTV. The footage appeared to show a runner – described at the time as a white man in his 30s with brown eyes and short, brown hair – pushing a 33-year-old woman into the road as a Number 430 bus bore down on her.

Oliver Salbris, the bus driver, managed to swerve and miss the woman’s head by inches, the Mail reported. The jogger did not stop.

About 15 minutes after the incident, the jogger returned across the bridge and was confronted by the victim, but he ignored her and carried on running.

Police released images of a runner wearing a grey T-shirt, dark blue shorts and grey trainers, prompting a widespread manhunt. Detectives interviewed 50 men and arrested three suspects at the time, but no one was ever charged. The investigation was closed in 2018.

New information reportedly came to light, leading to Monday’s arrest. The Daily Mail reported that the suspect is a wealthy banker with connections to royalty, and that he was detained at his home in west London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “On Monday, 15 June, a 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.

“He was taken to police custody, where he remains. The arrest relates to an incident on 5 May 2017, where a woman was pushed into the path of a bus on Putney Bridge in Putney. Inquiries continue.”

During the 2017 incident, the woman had been walking south on the bridge at about 7.40am when the jogger, running in the opposite direction, appeared to push her into the road.

The arrest marks the latest twist in a case that has haunted west London for years, with the culprit still unidentified after three previous suspects were released without charge.
