Real Madrid sign Dumfries as Alexander-Arnold overlooked for England World Cup squad

Real Madrid have signed Netherlands full-back Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan on a four-year deal, activating his £17.1m release clause to provide competition for England international Trent Alexander-Arnold. The 30-year-old becomes Real's fourth summer signing after Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konate, as president Florentino Perez delivers on his promise to strengthen defensive options following a trophyless season and the return of Jose Mourinho as manager for a second spell.

Dumfries, who helped Inter win Serie A twice and the Coppa Italia three times, made 207 appearances for the Italian club, scoring 27 goals and providing 28 assists. His arrival at the Bernabéu underscores the difficulties Alexander-Arnold has faced since moving from Liverpool last summer. The England right-back has been omitted from Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad, with the manager simply not selecting him for the final roster. Persistent questions about Alexander-Arnold's defensive reliability and tactical discipline, combined with an inconsistent season adapting to a new country and system, pushed him out of the picture. Tuchel instead opted for Reece James, Tino Livramento and Djed Spence.

Elsewhere, Brighton have bolstered their defence by signing Austria centre-back Michael Svoboda from Serie B champions Venezia on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee. The 27-year-old, who captained Venezia to the title last season, is currently with Austria at the World Cup and will join up with Fabian Hurzeler's squad later this summer. "Michael has enjoyed a fantastic season with Venezia, captaining them to the league title," Hurzeler said. "He has a number of attributes that we believe will see him adapt well to how we play, both in and out of possession." Svoboda began his career in Austria with Schwechat and helped WSG Tirol win promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga before moving to Venezia in 2020, where he earned promotion to Serie A twice. He made his Austria debut in October 2024 and has four international caps. The defender becomes Brighton's fifth signing of the 2026-27 campaign, following the arrivals of Zadok Yohanna, Pascal Struijk, Costinha and Rodrigo Rego, as the club reshapes its defence after the £52m sale of Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham, having also agreed a club-record £46m deal for Croatia defender Luka Vuskovic.
