Real Madrid have made contact over a move for West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, but Manchester United remain frontrunners for the Portugal midfielder despite refusing to meet the Hammers' £80m asking price. The 21-year-old, also a target for Paris St-Germain, has become the centre of a three-way battle that threatens to define the summer window.
United's reluctance to pay up has opened the door for Madrid, who have already inquired about Fernandes' situation. But the Premier League side are not giving up: they are also targeting a second West Ham player, winger Crysencio Summerville, with talks opened over a potential £50m move. Chelsea and Tottenham are interested too, but United's ability to offer Champions League football under Michael Carrick gives them an edge.

Madrid's interest does not stop there. They have also asked about Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha, with Manchester City and Manchester United also in the running for the 25-year-old Germany midfielder.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, are set to complete the signing of Morocco forward Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven for more than £45m. The move will bolster their attack as they look to rebuild.
Elsewhere, Newcastle United will step up talks for Osasuna's Victor Munoz, the 22-year-old Spain winger, this week. They are also willing to sell goalkeeper Nick Pope for £5m, with Ipswich and Hull City interested.
Barcelona's option to make Marcus Rashford's loan from Manchester United permanent, worth £35m, is set to expire without being activated. The England forward will return to Old Trafford.
Leeds United are lining up a move for Sporting's Ousmane Diomande, the 22-year-old Ivory Coast centre-back, as a potential replacement for Joe Rodon.
And West Ham, despite the potential loss of Fernandes and Summerville, are monitoring Watford's Nestory Irankunda, the 20-year-old winger, during Australia's World Cup campaign.
The window is heating up, but the Fernandes saga remains the one to watch – can United bridge the gap, or will Madrid swoop?
