Scotland fans get personalised World Cup coverage as Timber ruled out

Scotland are back at the men's World Cup for the first time since 1998, and BBC Sport is making sure fans don't miss a moment. For those signed in with a Scottish postcode, the website will include additional Scottish stories on the front page throughout the campaign. On the app, a few taps can bring Scottish football news to the very top of the page, with options to follow topics such as Scotland Sport, Scotland Men's Football Team and Scottish Football.

But while Tartan Army supporters gear up for the finals, other nations have been forced to reshape their plans. Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber has been ruled out of the Netherlands' World Cup campaign with a groin injury and replaced by Lutsharel Geertruida. Timber had been sidelined since mid-March but returned as a 66th-minute substitute in the Champions League final on 30 May – his first appearance since a 2-0 win over Everton on 14 March. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta had declared the 24-year-old "fit" to play before the final. However, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said on Monday that Timber had "not recovered sufficiently" to take part in the tournament in a "medically responsible manner". He will leave the national team's pre-camp in New York after a friendly against Uzbekistan. Timber, capped 23 times since his debut in June 2021, is replaced by Geertruida, a 25-year-old who spent last season on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. The Netherlands open their Group F campaign against Japan on 14 June, before facing Sweden and Tunisia.

There is better news for Brazil, however. Neymar's World Cup hopes have been given a boost after the Brazilian Football Confederation revealed he is making "good progress" in his recovery from a calf injury. The 34-year-old, who returned to Santos in early 2025, suffered a grade-two muscle tear last month and was expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks. A further scan on Monday showed "good progress… within expected parameters", and he will continue the recovery and physical preparation process planned by the national team's medical staff. Neymar has already missed Brazil's warm-up friendlies – a 6-2 win against Panama and a 2-1 victory over Egypt – and faces a race to be fit for their opening group game against Morocco on 13 June. Brazil's all-time leading scorer, with 79 goals in 128 appearances, is hoping to appear at his fourth World Cup after featuring in 2014, 2018 and 2022. His tournament, like Scotland's return, will be followed intently – and BBC Sport is making sure fans can follow it all their way.
